Productivity: Get Things Done

Fun Fact: Luxembourg is the most productive country in the world (2023).

In today's world, productivity can be defined as the rate at which value is created is generated per unit time.

This value can be in the form of products, services, or other contributions that positively impact individuals or society.

Coming from a background in Natural Science, I find it hard not to talk about the true producers: plants!

As we all know, producers convert three raw materials—water, carbon dioxide, and sunlight—into glucose while releasing oxygen as a by-product of photosynthesis.

Even though oxygen may not serve a direct purpose for the plant, especially during the day, there is always a demand for oxygen.

Therefore, being a producer is more than just making things that are useful to yourself;

it's also about serving others.

CAPE Level Biology truly gave me an appreciation for plants, and just like them, humans also possess the ability to produce.

However, unlike plants, we naturally fall under the category of consumers, which is why tracking productivity becomes essential.

You don't see a mango tree worrying about the number of mangoes it will have this season.

Now, you are probably wondering, "How do I increase my productivity?"

The short answer is to be more plant-like, but here are a couple of tips:

1) Take a break

Sunflowers typically go dormant during the winter months or in regions with cold temperatures.

When the plant goes dormant, it enters a state of rest, conserving energy and resources to survive the harsh conditions.

Just like sunflowers, we should recognize the value of taking breaks and ensuring proper rest to maintain long-term productivity.

2)  Create Your Productivity Formula

My formula would look something like this:

Productivity (P) = Water (W) + Cool Room (CR) + Music (M) - Procrastination (Pr)

In this formula, Water represents the hydration that keeps my mind sharp, Cool Room symbolizes the ideal environment to stay focused, and Music is the motivating background that keeps me going.

However, coffee-heads might swap the Water for Caffeine, adding an extra jolt to their productivity.

3) Adapt and Overcome

Silverswords are a group of plants belonging to the sunflower family (Asteraceae) and are native to the Hawaiian Islands. Some species of Silverswords have developed specific adaptations to thrive in volcanic habitats.

Likewise, as individuals, we should strive to be adaptable and open to change, adjusting our approaches and strategies to overcome various challenges.

One effective method to enhance our adaptability is through continuous learning and skill improvement.

4) Collaborate

In forests, plants often collaborate through symbiotic relationships, benefiting each other's growth.

Similarly, in our workplaces and teams, we should foster a collaborative and supportive environment, leveraging collective strengths to enhance productivity.

5) Track Your Productivity

Since we are consumers in nature, we need to put in the effort to track our productivity.

Tools like Notion, Habitica, Evernote, and more offer valuable support.

They help us stay organized, set goals, and maintain focus, boosting productivity in all aspects of life. Embrace these tools for greater efficiency and success!
